The shelter dates from 1935, shortly after Vitosha was declared a national park.
The shelter has no overnight places. It offers a tourist canteen with about 30 seats and a buffet, open daily from 8:00 to 19:00, as well as a sanitary facility. The entrance hall is open around the clock. Books are sold and hikers' booklets are stamped.
The shelter is a point on the European E4 trail, in the "Know Bulgaria – 100 National Tourist Sites" movement (No. 74a) and in the "Conqueror of the 10 Mountain Firsts" movement (No. 4). The nearest approach is from the upper lift station (about 30 min), and Aleko Hut is about 1 h 30 min away.
