Strashnoto Ezero Shelter is a single-storey stone building on the northern shore of Strashnoto Lake in Rila, at the foot of Popova Kapa and the Kupenite peaks. It consists of a vestibule and a large room with sleeping platforms. It is heated by solid-fuel stoves, and the toilets are outside. The shelter has no water supply.
In July 2025, as part of the Hut of the Year campaign, with the support of Pirinsko and the Bulgarian Tourist Union, an emergency solar system with a solar panel, battery and inverter was installed at the shelter, providing 220 V for lighting and for charging phones and GPS devices.
The shelter is a waypoint on the E-4 European long-distance trail in the section between Malyovitsa Hut, the Popovi Kapi pass, Kobilino Branishte Shelter and Ribni Ezera Hut. It is about 2:30 h from Malyovitsa Hut and about 2 h from Kobilino Branishte Shelter. From here one can also reach Popova Kapa Peak in 30 to 60 min along an unmarked path suitable only for experienced, well-prepared hikers.
